Making Beauty Out of Grief: Morning Altars in the Mountain View Cemetery

I've been studying death and dying for many years now and understanding that a culture is only as healthy as how it treats its dying people. Through this learning, I have encountered the devastating ways within this culture that we are death phobic and grief illiterate.

I'm quite proud to be partnering up with the ReImagine Death Festival this year. On Saturday, April 21st, I will take a group of big hearted ones to the Mountain View cemetery in Oakland to make earth altars for of our family and friends who have died on our watch. We will be making beauty to express our grief and to feed their memory.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn a seven-step process which includes foraging, wandering, and creating earth art that inspires a meaningful collaboration with nature.  The practice of Morning Altars also lets us strengthen our relationship to impermanence and learn to let go of our resistance to change.  Learn how this ancient and universal practice can bring us closer to the place we live, connecting us to creative expression and the act of beauty-making.

Reimagine is co-created by a loose network of interested artists, storytellers, healthcare professionals, innovators, designers, organizations and individuals, banding together to amplify the end-of-life conversation.
